this is so the wrong icon for this post
Jun. 4th, 2012 09:52 pmI really need to get on someone to make me an icon with all the sports I follow. It would save me so much hassle when trying to get around my limited icon space!
Anyway, in honour of the fact that tomorrow David Pocock is going to captain the Australian national side for the first time (with a full cap and everything that is), I figured I'd make this post - which I've been thinking about for quite some time entitled:
Lets get you started. David Pocock is a rugby (union) player and he posts pictures of himself (and his teammates)like this on twitter:

Let me tell you more.
He was born in Zimbabwe and moved to Australia when he was 14, back when Mugabe really got into his, 'white people are evil' thing, and his family were forced to leave almost everything they had behind and emigrate :(
He started playing rugby in high school and moved up the ranks through the various age grades and quickly became a player to watch. He became a regular in the starting XV in 2010, but really became a household name during last years Rugby World Cup.

Look at that adorable face!
So anyway, there he was, being awesome at rugby (so awesome the opposition build their game around stopping him playing).
But strangely enough, it was my NHL binge that made me think 'Hey, let me see what rugby players are on twitter' (As an aside, guys, rugby players are the best on twitter. NHL'ers are pretty boring for the most part, but rugby players are full of fun and personality and posts like these).
So anyway, add him on twitter, find out he has great taste in music. He loves to read. And then, the killer blows: Politically aware and not afraid to talk about it, outspoken supporter of marriage equality - and he's big on women's rights too (especially female athletes who get less recognition from the media, a pet peeve of mine too). He's also open about suffering from an eating disorder since he was a teen and still dealing with it.
Seriously though, this article kind of summarises everything, and totally makes him sound like such a do-gooder, which he kind of is, but at least he's not obnoxious about it. (Seriously though, he's a commited Christian who refuses to legally marry his girlfriend until Australia allows for marriage equality. Standing up for what you believe in = +10000000 points in my book. ♥______♥)
Oh, and those pictures he posted? Weren't just for fun, but to help promote his charity. (Story here)
Am I missing anything? Oh yeah, he likes to garden too. He also takes pretty pictures and abuses instagram a lot, but I'm not goint to spam you with all those. Just take my word for it.
In conclusion, perfect human being. This concludes todays post on why rugby players > all other sports players. And remember:

Date: 2012-06-05 05:45 am (UTC)Seriously when I first started following him and this stuff started popping up I just kept being like, no but, seriously, is he for real? And then it just kept on happening and I was like, holy crap he is actually for real. WTF!
The thing that helps bring him down to somewhat normal levels of awesomeness is that he plays for Western Force who suck :P (And are in Perth....*hinthint* :)
I think he's ruined me for all other pro athletes becase now I'm just like, 'But no one can be as awesome as David Pocock, your argument is invalid'
(The worst part is that I'm not even a Wallabies fan really. But now I feel compelled to care about them :| Whatever, I still want Wales to smash them this weekend!)

Date: 2012-06-05 08:40 am (UTC)For real, all evidence suggests he is a quality human being and I am charmed. Super charmed. HE IS ONLY MY AGE. HE RAISES MONEY TO HELP THE DISADVANTAGED PEOPLE IN ZIMBABWE. HE MANAGES TO BALANCE HIS RELIGION AND BEING PRO GAY RIGHTS. HE'S A FEMINIST.
I CAN"T STOP TALKING IN CAPSLOCKS.
Man, he won WA Young Australian of the year. I just..... what.
I've gone from zero to super invested in hours. This is not cool. I know nothing about the sport and am still sad that google tells me he might be leaving the Force.

Date: 2012-06-05 02:03 pm (UTC)For all that I'm a sports junkie, rugby is my one true love, so I will forever be quite glad to drag other people into it :D
Charming is exactly the right word for him. He's the kind of guy who everyone would love, your friends, your parents, your grandparents, random people on the street. <3 him.
I am also bummed that he might be leaving the Force! I heard that this morning and was like Nooo! I mean, he has a point in that he might actually be able to win something with the Brumbies, and it will probably be a while before WF get their act together, but *sigh*
...
Which means you should totally go to a game once the June internationals are over! :P

See, and now I'm jealous because you have good rugby around you! I'd have to go to France to get anywhere close to proper rugby :(
But still - enjoy! As for learning the rules, the best way to learn is to watch a lot because uh, while the basic principle is quite simple, it does have a bunch of random rules thrown in which are....random. But still, best sport :D
If you have questions or anything feel free to spam me with them! Also, wait, you live in Australia - it should be on TV (with commentators who one guy I know likes to refer to as the 3 stooges). But still, should you want links to where you can stream games or the one forum which always has them up super quick to download afterwards - just let me know :D

Date: 2012-06-06 05:57 am (UTC)I'll have to check what's on the telly but it should be doable. And we have a bunch of awesome sports writers and free to air sports programs so I'm in the right place to learn.
I will totally hit you up though. I've had to tone down my sports fangirling on twitter as to not scare away all my followers. I think adding rugby to the fray would be a step too far lol

Date: 2012-06-07 02:15 am (UTC)Lol. This is why I like the fact that I have like, 2 twitter followers who arent bots - none of whom are ever on anyway. It means I can talk/rant about whatever I want without feeling like people wont care.
